CA sales tax will be added to all Amazon.com purchases starting Sept. 15th!
Beginning on Sept 15th, Amazon.com will assess sales tax to all California residents purchasing items from their website.  This law has come about due to our state’s ever-growing budget concerns and has been in the works for some time now.
Amazon.com has been criticized for having an unfair advantage in the retail market.  Customers will frequently visit brick-and-mortar stores to view the items in person, but will make their purchases through Amazon to avoid paying sales tax.  Many feel that this law change will create an even playing ground for all stores to compete.  Up until now, Amazon was not required to collect sales tax from California residents because they did not have a distribution center located within the state.
The California sales tax rate will range from 7.25% to 9.75% depending on where you live.
California residents have always been required to remit any unpaid sales tax or “use tax” to the state on their annual state income tax returns if it was not assessed at the point of sale.
