In Honor of National Philanthropic Day (November 15th 2014)…

Have you considered charitable giving as a tax planning strategy for 2014?

It’s that time of year again! As we enter into the holiday season (which based on the local Target store is now officially the day after Halloween) of festive parties, family gatherings, and of course,  gift giving, it creates a natural opportunity for those who are charitably inclined to consider yearend charitable contributions.  In addition to the philanthropic aspect of charitable giving, it also can be used as an effective  estate and yearend tax planning tool.

Most American households make their charitable gifts in cash, with the corresponding tax deduction allowed as an itemized deduction on their individual tax returns. In most instances, taxpayers may deduct up to 50% of their adjusted gross income (AGI) for cash gifts made to public charities.  For gifts that exceed the 50% threshold, the contribution deduction is carried forward for a five year period.

For those who plan on incorporating charitable giving into their estate and tax planning strategies, gifting of highly appreciated property (stock, mutual funds, real estate) can be an extremely valuable tool that is often overlooked. This tax planning strategy is derived from the general idea […]

Four-time winner

By James Dunn, Business Journal Staff Reporter

SANTA ROSA –  “We’re going fly fishing,” said Michael  Musson, partner at Linkenheimer LLP CPAs & Advisors since 1989. “We really work as a team. … There are no team-building sessions. It’s a great crew with a lot of cohesiveness.  If there’s a ditch to dig, everybody picks up a shovel.”

The company sponsors a golf tournament every September to get together as a group.

“If we hit our numbers, we have a bonus trip every year,” Mr. Musson said. “Last year was Nicaragua.” This year is likely to be a trip to Mexico.

“John Jones (managing partner) is an extremely ethical, non-judgmental, even-keeled guy,” Mr. Musson said. “All of that trickles down to everybody. He has a family and hobbies.”

Mr. Jones encourages the company’s 20 employees to have balanced lives. “I have worked for people who had families but didn’t acknowledge them,” Mr. Musson said. He worked until 10 every night and felt pressured. […]

John Jones Recognized by Press Democrat for Global Eye Care Projects

John Jones’ good deeds have not gone unnoticed. On Sunday, July 8th, the Press Democrat released an article detailing his many trips to Nicaragua. Over the past 17 years, John has led and organized over 10 trips to Third World countries delivering basic health services. During those 17 years, he has helped over 15,000 people see more clearly.

John is normally accompanied by members of his local church or by fellow Rotarians. His outreach trips have included destinations such as Nicaragua, Mexico, Haiti, Guatemala, Samoa and Vietnam.

His most recent project, involves raising $100,000 for the first ever surgery center in the Rio San Juan region of Nicaragua. This remote region is home to 26,000 people who have virtually no medical care available locally. As the leader of his Rotary clubs efforts, they have already raised $46,000.

Even though he isn’t an eye doctor, the CPA has had a profound affect on the region, providing life changing health services, including eye exams and distributing eye glasses.
